Now available: Volume 8 (1) of Sites, a journal of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies

This issue of Sites, guest edited by Rhonda Shaw, is based on papers presented at The Future of Organ and Tissue Donation Conference held at Victoria University of Wellington on 7th April, 2010. This multi-disciplinary symposium was designed to generate discussion around the topic of organ donation in New Zealand. The articles in this special issue continue that work, featuring research by social scientists on the topic of organ and xeno transplantation. Unlike the media and transplantation advocates, who ask what we could do, and what we should do, to solve the scarcity of human organs, the articles in this volume take a different approach. Contributors ask how people make sense of bodily exchanges when donating and receiving tissue from others, including non-human animals, and the impact of such exchanges on our understandings of identity, relatedness and kinship.

Now available: Vol 7 No 2 (2010) of Sites: a journal of Social Anthropology & Cultural Studies

This special issue, guest edited by medical anthropologist Chrystal Jaye and palliative care specialist Rod MacLeod, offers a snapshot of contemporary research into the field of end-of-life care in New Zealand. As an illustration of the trans-disciplinary scope of medical anthropology, it represents a dialogue between researchers and practitioners from the disciplines of anthropology, palliative care, nursing and health professional education. Health professionals and carers are reminded of the need to be patient centred and remain cognisant of the lived experiences and lifeworlds of their clients and patients. Contributors also ask how health professionals and carers can better care for those approaching the end of their life, and how policy makers and palliative care service providers can better support those who are receiving end-of-life care, as well as those who are providing it.

This special issue of Sites - with six specifically commissioned articles and six book reviews - contextualises the current nature of research and teaching in the field of material culture studies within a context which is relevant to New Zealand/Aotearoa as well as the Pacific. As an interdisciplinary forum, it addresses many recent theoretical and methodological developments in this field as they apply to a range of related disciplines interested in the material world. It also highlights the growing crossovers and collaborations between pedagogy, creative art, museum curation, community participation and social issues.

Now Available: Vol 5 No 2 (2008) of Sites. A journal of social anthropology and cultural studies.

This issue features Jacqueline Leckie as guest editor of a selection of recent research investigating the connections between Asia and Aotearoa focussing on the impact of these new connections for Asians living in New Zealand. The diverse collection of writing offers insights on the experiences of Asians as preschoolers, migrants, museum goers, students, and as the imagined other of 'New Zealanders'. The collection is thus an interesting contribution to the ongoing challenge of dominant and national representations of identity within the bi-cultural framework of Aotearoa.

The mid year issue of Sites for 2008 is now available in the form of a special issue edited by Chris Prentice and Vijay Devadas. Entitled 'Everyday Postcolonial Politics, the issue draws together an intriguing collection of articles which examine specific experiences of postcoloniality and its political expression in everyday living. Drawing on work from both Australia and Aoteaora New Zealand, the issue is a welcome return in focus for Sites to the cultural studies that was so central to its earlier years.

The June edition of Sites for 2007 is now available. Edited by Ruth Fitzgerald, it features an interesting and diverse collection of writing by social scientists across New Zealand. The volume opens with reflections by Julie Park and Judith Littleton on their long running research project into the nature of TB in New Zealand. It also discusses the political dimensions of the expression of Maori identity through disputes around Maori fisheries and the public provision of Rongoa (traditional Maori healing) services. In an intriguing article, Elaine Webster ponders the possible emergence of a Pakeha form of taonga while Cyril Schafer and Donna McKenzie in their separate articles discuss further aspects of Pakeha social life - the funeral industry and intimate relationships. We also feature the first article in the field of sociolinguistics for Sites with the fascinating study of self narratives of identity amongst diasporic Japanese.
